In a first for the NCBeerGuys, today we review a beer both in it’s original version and also in the Imperial version as we drink and review the Coco Loco and the Imperial Coco Loco out of the NoDa Brewing Company of Charlotte. The Imperial Coco Loco is one NoDa’s Top Shelf Series releases and is available in limited release bottles as of April. This was only NoDa’s 3rd release of bottled products and we are pleased to have gotten our hands on a bottle. The original is described as “Chocolate and Brown malts contribute a stunningly deep rich color with ruby highlights in this robust Porter”. The Imperial Coco Loco is based on the GABF silver medal winning recipe for the original porter but pumped up with more malts, more cacao and more coconut. NoDa says that “by keeping the same English brown and chocolate malts from our original recipe, but greatly increasing the amounts used and adding nearly double the amount of hand roasted organic coconut and cacao nibs, we achieve an amplified version of our beloved robust porter.” Let’s see how these 2 versions of the same brew stack up!
