Remember the days when you took your lunch to school, carrying it in a metal lunchbox (I had a Scooby Do one) or a brown paper bag? We didn’t have ice blocks or refrigerators in the classroom so your lunch was at room temperature but it didn’t matter. I always wanted a peanut butter and jelly sandwich – there was nothing else better! It was nice and warm and with that half-pint carton of milk, lunch was awesome! Wrapped in aluminum foil, it trapped all that aroma of the sandwich until it was opened up and everyone got a whiff of it.
Catawba Brewing has successfully brought back all those aromas and flavors with their Peanut Butter Jelly Time Brown Ale. It’s been out for a few years now but I always look forward to the release of it each year. When I make my sandwich, I load both the peanut butter and jelly, squishing it in between two slices of bread. It’s mammoth and full of flavor, including the bread AND crust (never cut the crust off!). Peanut Butter Jelly Time doesn’t overload you with peanut butter or raspberry flavor – the brewers have achieved a nice balance between the two. That aroma you got when you opened your warm sandwich is present when you open this can. Aroma is part of the craft beer experience and this one is on target.
There are a lot of peanut butter porters and milk stouts in the market and some of them are just downright sticky in your mouth. The fruit beer count is even higher but when you put the fruit and peanut butter together, the number drops dramatically. Catawba Brewing has a nice corner of the market with this beer and the beer delivers. The balance of flavors still wouldn’t make it a true sandwich without the breadiness they’ve added with the great mix of malts.
So now you have childhood lunch memories in a can and it’s being released on March 3, 2017. Check your local bottle shops for this wonderfully unique beer – it’s an experience you don’t want to miss!
