Sip and Sleuth: Detect Beer Off Flavors at Foothills Brewing April 13 2015

Monday, April 13, 2015 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Any notes of butter or bananas? Wet basement or pennies? Does the beer taste leathery or stale, oily or rancid? Buttery notes are called diacetyl, banana is isoamyl acetate, wet basement is musty and pennies is metallic. There are 32 different off flavors. These off flavors may be common in beer but when present imply something went wrong in the brewing or stoarge of the beer. This event will make you a more sophisticated beer drinker while having fun. Trained beer tasters will lead you and your friends through 24 different flavors. You will also taste 5 different Foothills Beers and together, with your brewing expert, describe the flavors and aromas in each.

The format of this event is seated. You will not be moving from table to table like other Geeks-N-Taps events. The seating is limited.

Strange Cargo! An Evening of Barrel Aged Beers April 22 2015

Big Boss Brewing is offering a unique showcase of beers for North Carolina Beer month! A one night opportunity to sample several of our Strange Cargo series, barrel aged beers in one place.  Bourbon, wine, tequila and brandy barrel aged brews from the wall of oak barrels and the first offering from our foudres. A low ticket price of $15 will give you access to this event with many of these beers being final offerings at the brewery.

Since releasing our first sour ale in 2009 the popularity of the style has soared.  We slowly built up our barrel inventory and secured two Italian made oak foudres.  Strange Cargo represents the brand family of Big Boss wood aged beers!  One of the featured beers will be Saints & Sinners:  Aged in oak foeders for six months, S&S is a Flanders inspired ale that captures a refreshing fruit and oak qualities of the vessel. Brewed with corn from Yates Mill, one of the oldest working stone mills in the country (established around 1756) is right here in Raleigh.

Stinky Genes - Does your DNA impact your taste in beer at Flytrap Brewing April 26 2015

Ever wonder why some people love IPAs and other people hate them? Our genes or DNA influence what we can smell and taste. Join local scientists and find out if you can taste bitter compounds, smell aromas found in beer, how many taste buds you have and isolate DNA from strawberries. Take a flavor trip where lemons taste like lemonade and cream cheese tastes like cheese cake. Meet Flytrap's brewer and learn all about how they create novel flavors in their small batch brews. The format is like speed dating where you move from table to table and engage in activities and conversation with scientists and other patrons all while drinking beer. This event is more about science and is not a beer festival. Each ticket includes 5 tastings of Flytrap's great brews.

There are two entry times and admission for each is limited to minimize lines for activities. The first entry time is at 1:00 pm and the second is at 3:00 pm. You do not need to arrive exactly at the entry time because you will be moving from table to table at your own pace. You can come anytime and have a beer at the bar and stay as late as you like.
